Highlands tapestry weaver Joan Baxter and musician Mary Ann Kennedy, are coming together for an
exciting new venture in April.
The pair, both internationally renowned artists, are running a week-long retreat combining weaving and traditional music with exploring the Gaelic language and its landscapes.
The week will be held at Mary Ann’s studio, Watercolour Music, in Ardgour – just across Loch Linnhe from Fort William, with views across to Ben Nevis.
Tapestry weavers, cloth weavers and musicians are all welcome to join in.
Mary-Ann said: "We plan to weave a twill cloth and waulk it, exploring traditional waulking songs as part of the week. There is also the opportunity to explore the Gaelic colour circle and Gaelic place names through a trip out from Ardgour.
"But a key objective of the retreat is simply to provide creative space and time, whether to develop new ideas or work on current projects."
People can work collaboratively if they want, but there is no need to be an expert weaver or musician, as long as they are confident in the basics and are open to new ideas.
Irene Evison, also from Ardgour, and Anna Wetherell, who lead the tapestry collaborative Nearly Wild Weaving, are handling the bookings and will also be on hand to provide practical support during the week, and invite people to discover the surrounding landscape in more detail from its natural history to weaving outdoors – local weather permitting.
