Oban Saints 2010s cashed in their get out of jail card when they scored the winner in the final seconds of their match against Cambuslang who are bottom of the Glasgow and District Youth Football League.
Saints controlled most of the first half, with Finlay Macallum stepping up to lead the line in the absence of the injured Lyam Fox.
However, clear-cut chances were at a premium until the 25th minute, when a flick-on header from Leon MacLean was handled by a Cambuslang defender, earning Oban Saints a penalty.
Joe Hill made no mistake from the spot, confidently dispatching the ball into the back of the net to give Saints a well-deserved lead.
Credit to Cambuslang, they came back into the game and equalised with a thunderous free kick from 20 yards, leaving Saints’ goalkeeper Finlay Milton with no chance.
The second half mirrored the first, with Saints on the attack, constantly probing the Cambuslang defence.
Despite their valiant efforts, the home side found themselves repeatedly clearing the ball, only for Saints to regroup and launch another assault on their goal.
As the clock wound down, it seemed Cambuslang would escape with a valuable point.
A late surge from the visitors saw Cairon MacNab break through on goal, only to be denied by the Cambuslang keeper. Jubilation for the Saints’ contingent came in the dying moments when Leon MacLean unleashed a powerful strike from 20 yards, forcing a parry from the keeper. The ball fell kindly for Dylan Ross who was perfectly positioned to knock the ball home to secure the vital three points for Saints.
With eight home games remaining, Saints are determined to maintain their momentum and secure their position at the top of the table, but first, they must complete their final away trip this Sunday to take on Third Lanark, who have title aspirations of their own.
