Lochgilphead Red Star 4-2 Stedfast AFC

Red Star once again welcomed good quality opposition to the joint campus on Saturday as they played Central League 1B side Stedfast.

Stedfast took the lead early on, perhaps against the run of play, when referee Jimmy Lister, who had a good game, pointed to the spot when Star keeper Ben Pollock was adjudged to have brought down the Stedfast forward in the box. The striker stepped up and slotted home the penalty to put his side 0-1 up.

Star were given the chance to draw level from the spot themselves when Ciaran McPhie was brought down by a defender in the Stedfast box. The young winger stepped up but saw his effort well saved by the keeper who also stopped the rebound.

Star pulled themselves level after 25 minutes when Ciaran McPhie hammered home from the edge of the box after a neat lay off from Neil Russell.

Star were starting to pin their opponents back now and McPhie added a second goal before the break with another superb strike from 25 yards which found the top left corner to make the score 2-1 at the break.

Into the second half and both sides made full use of their large squads so the game didn’t have the same flow as the first half. It was Stedfast who pulled themselves level after 62 minutes when their winger cut in from the Star right flank and beat Ben Pollock to level the match at 2-2.

It stayed this way until the last five minutes when Ciaran McPhie fired the home side back in front and completed a superb hat trick with another thunderbolt from 25 yards.

Ben Pollock made an excellent save for Star in the last minute before Neil Russell secured a 4-2 win with an well-placed strike of his own to give Star a confidence-boosting victory.
