Feathers flew on the River Aray in the annual fundraising Duck Derby.

Organised on Sunday July 30 by Inveraray and district branch of The Royal British Legion Scotland, this has become a fun event for all the family.

Helped by Alistair Rodden, Robert McCulloch and Robert Wilson, Ian Lindsay set off 500 ducks off in a yellow cascade, each sponsored to the tune of £1.

After a slow start, the pace picked up and two competitors found the faster current they were looking for.

A third sneaked up on the inside on an eddy as the rest of the 500 flocked together in the pack further upstream.

In the end, it was the speedy duck sponsored by Inveraray woman Lesley Pirie – no slouch herself in the speed stakes – that crossed the winning line in first place, earning Lesley a tidy £50.

The second prize winner will be heading to Gillespie’s butchers for a T-bone with his £25 winnings. What else would Jak the Jack Russell – owned by David and Cindy MacInnes – do with the cash?

The third place prize of £15 was won by young William McArthur.

After a lot of shepherding work by Robert Wilson in his rubber dinghy, the final duck to cross the line was one sponsored by ‘DJ’ MacDonald of Inveraray, earning him £10.

At the end of an afternoon enjoyed by kids of all ages, as well as the many canine ‘helpers’ who took a shine to the ducks, Ian Lindsay said: ‘Thanks to everyone who came out to support the event and bought ducks. It’s been great fun.’
