A RAF Tornado jet, believed to have two crew on board has crashed near the A83 near Glen Kinglass close to the Rest and Be Thankful.
The plane is said to be from RAF Leuchars in Fife and there is no report yet about the condition of the pilot or navigator; no civilians have been injured.
The jet has come down in the Glen Kinglass area and people there, and in Arrochar on the other side of the pass, report hearing the noise of very low flying jets training in the area during the morning.
There is as an as yet unsubstantiated report that the aircraft narrowly missed a lorry.
John MacDonald a resident of Cairndow, said: ‘The planes were going round and round all morning. It was unusual the way they were flying – it was like one big dogfight. We could see three of them.’
He added: ‘There’s a lot of activity going on with police and a huge Hercules is hovering above the area now – I reckon they’re probably looking for the plane.’
Anne Bell, of Lochgilphead, who was on her way to Glasgow with her two grandchildren at the time of the crash said: ‘The two jets passed over us in Arrochar probably about two minutes before the crash happened. The noise was so loud and they were flying very low. And then we didn’t hear anything else – it’s terrifying.’
A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: ‘We can confirm that police were called at 11.45am to a report of a plane crash near the Rest and Be Thankful, Arrochar. Police are arriving at the scene.’
All emergency services and RAF specialists are making their way to the scene.
