MID-ARGYLL Hospital held a Healthy Working Lives day last Thursday to promote healthy living in the workplace.
The day organised by the community hospital wanted to promote healthy lifestyles to staff and visitors.
Smoking cessation worker Elspeth Shaw claimed there has been a big mind shift in the way people are thinking about their health because of projects like this one.
She said: ‘People are not able to smoke in the way that they used to. The fact that the government has invested health promotion and workers, like myself, means that they are willing to help people who want to give up.’
Elspeth held high a large jar and said: ‘This is the amount of tar that is stuck to the lungs of someone who smokes around 10 cigarettes per day. When you show someone who is a smoker something like this it really can make a difference to their health.’
‘The aim of the Healthy Working Lives project,’ explained Angela Coll, project co-ordinator, ‘is to get people thinking about how they can manage their own health.
‘I hope that local business and employers will take part in the free advice and information service to promote healthy lives amongst their staff. It is a project that really does benefit everyone.’
The project can be contacted on 0800 019 2211 or via their website on www.healthyworkinglives.com.
