THE A83 has claimed another life following a two-vehicle road accident at Ardgartan near Arrochar last week.
A 64-year-old man was killed and two men were injured following the crash last Thursday (November 6).
This is the second death to occur on the A83 this year, compared to a death toll of six in 2007.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: ‘At around 2.40pm, a 43 year-old man was driving his Dodge pick-up southbound along the A83 towards Arrochar when it collided with a northbound Mercedes Sprinter van near Ardgartan being driven by a 36 year-old man.
‘The 43 year-old driver was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he is presently receiving treatment. Hospital staff described his condition as ‘stable.’
The 64 year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police refused to disclose details of the dead man at the request of his family.
Discharged
The 36 year-old male driver of the Mercedes van was also taken to hospital with minor injuries and discharged after treatment.
The road was closed for around eight hours with diversions in place via the A82 Dalmally to Crianlarich road.
An eyewitness who passed the scene of the accident said the area was strewn with pieces of wooden fencing.
The man, who asked not to be named, said: ‘Both vehicles went through the wooden barriers and were lying on the beach. There was wood from the fencing all over the road for about 100yards.’
Inspector David Ferguson of Argyll’s Road Policing Department, said: ‘It is always of great sadness when someone loses their life following a road collision.
‘Strathclyde Police is committed to reducing road deaths and road casualties and we will continue to provide high visibility policing and rigorous enforcement of police legislation.’
Enquiries are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash.
Witnesses are asked to contact road policing officers at Dumbarton Police Office on 01389 822124.
