Star disappointed with Sporto draw
Published:  03 October, 2008

LOCHGILPHEAD Red Star took on newly promoted Sporto last Saturday at the Ropework Park.

The Hire a Joiner sponsored home side felt aggrieved however only to come away from this clash with a point.

The deadlock was broken on the 12-minute mark when the Sporto centre back was adjudged to have pulled Asen down in the box. The Striker managed to recover however to send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot to put his side in front.

As the first half progressed Star were pushing for the second goal which would have made this game comfortable but to their credit the visiting Sporto side didn’t lie down.

From a Red Star corner they managed to pick up the ball and set up a blistering counter attack, which caught the home side off guard, the ball was played form the left wing into the box where the striker made no mistake in dispatching the equaliser.

Straight from the kick off Star gave the ball away again before the Sporto striker was chopped down on the edge of the box.

The Sporto number 10 made Star pay as he curled the ball round the wall and into the net to give the visitors a 2-1 half time lead.

Star came out for the second half shooting up the slope and after some positive words from the management team soon set about their task of rescuing this game.

Changes were made early on in the second half with Broderick, making his first appearance of the season coming on for Weir and Russell coming on up front for the lively Docherty.

The equaliser did eventually come for the home side with 15 minutes remaining when Asen was left free to head home a well-flighted corner.

Star now believed that a winner was on the cards and pressed on for the remainder of the game with both full backs getting forward to good effect.

Sporto did try and find a winner on the break as well but the Star backline remained solid throughout the second half but the game ended 2-2.

A.O.M Scaffolding sponsored Red Star play their first match in the Scottish Cup this Saturday when they take on A.F.C Columbia at the Ropework Park. Kick off 2pm.
