Call for traffic calming at Highbank
Fear for children’s safety
Published:  22 August, 2008

WORK has started on extending the size of the bus stop at Highbank Park in Lochgilphead – but angry residents say children are still taking their lives in their hands every time they cross the road.

il agreed to extend the area after complaints from parents that it was too small for the number of children who need to get the bus to school.

However, the fear now is that there is no traffic calming measures in place. One worried mum said: ‘The council thought it right to place a 30mph speed limit in place outside the new school campus despite the fact that the buses take the children into the school, and yet they feel it unnecessary to reduce the speed limit in a residential area.

‘The council will have blood on its hands if a child or elderly resident is hurt crossing the road.’

Another local woman added: ‘I have observed so many near misses with impatient drivers trying to get to work and it is only a matter of time before an accident occurs at this location.

‘It appears to everyone who has a child in this estate that their concerns have been dismissed and the council will do what it wants.’

A council spokeswoman said this week: ‘A shelter will be put up the first week of September as well as a handrail, and the council is looking into implementing a 30mph speed limit in that area.’
