Safety fears over fencing

FEARS that wooden fencing along the A83 could seriously injure or kill motorists were reinforced last week after a car smash near Inveraray.

A white Renault Clio driven by a man believed to be from Dunoon hit the pedestrian restraints on the A83 near Inveraray Golf Course.

The driver was not injured during the incident, which happened at 4.55pm last Tuesday.

A stave of the fencing pierced the passenger door and completely removed the handle, protruding into the passenger area.

The windscreen on the vehicle was also shattered by a timber rail.

A spokesman for Lochgilphead Police Office confirmed the accident had only involved the Renault Clio and no one was injured during the incident.

He added: ‘If anyone had been in the passenger seat they could have been seriously injured.’

The damaged area of fencing has been temporarily repaired by means of a 32ft stretch of plastic barriers.

Councillor Donnie MacMillan was shocked but not surprised to learn a vehicle had hit the barriers.

He said: ‘This accident proves beyond all doubt that Transport Scotland surely could find a more acceptable barrier to prevent people falling onto the shore.’

A spokeswoman for Transport Scotland said: ‘Our investigations into this accident are ongoing and they include an assessment of the wooden fencing.

‘Until these investigations are complete, it would be inappropriate to comment further.’
