Smoking ban will kill my shop
Tarbert man fears for business

A TARBERT businessman believes the future of his shop could be in jeopardy if controversial proposals by the Scottish executive are put in place.

Ian Macintyre is outraged that the executive is considering banning storeowners from displaying tobacco products in attempt to cut down on the number of youngsters smoking.

As one of the only specialist tobacconists in the country, Mr Macintyre said this week: ‘It is astonishing that it should be suggested that tobacconists hide their stock in trade under the counter. This would cause serious logistical problems, as well as being an attack on the liberty of retailers to carry on their legitimate trade and increase the incidence of smuggled and imitation product, with a greater risk to smokers’ health.’

He added: ‘For specialist tobacconists, any such restriction on the display of tobacco will seriously reduce their viability, as well as denying smokers the freedom to make an informed choice. Independent retailers are already at a disadvantage to supermarkets and multiples. Tobacco tends to make up a sizeable proportion of the independent’s sales.’

A recent survey of more than 200 independent shopkeepers carried out by The Independent Retail News, indicated that 15 percent would close or sell up if the proposals were put in place.

‘If 15 percent of independent stores throughout the country were to close, this would see more than 8,000 shops being lost along with the jobs they provide,’ said Mr Macintyre. ‘Many of these stores provide other valuable services in small communities.’

The Scottish executive consultation closes on September 8. For more information, visit tobaccoconsultation@dh.gsi.gov.uk
