Will you come up the Clyde in a banana boat?
Published:  18 July, 2008

IT IS an expression which means someone is maybe not the most intelligent in the world, but you would not be daft if you come up the River Clyde in this particular banana boat.

The banana boat speedboat event will help raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis research Fund while taking in the sights of Glasgow.

One Ardrishaig family is hoping local residents will back the event, which will help their 20-year-old son, a Cystic Fibrosis sufferer.

Thomas Welch is a third year geography and teaching student at Stirling University who was born with the disease.

Cystic Fibrosis is genetic, affecting the lungs, digestive system and can cause diabetes and liver disease.

There is no cure and the average life expectancy is 31 years.

The research fund is currently working on gene therapy, which is the main hope for sufferers but at the moment this particular form of treatment is still undergoing medical trials before it will be available to the general public.

The Welch family will be putting all monies raised from the banana boat event towards research into gene therapy.

Thomas’s mum, Karen, said: ‘It should be a really good fun day and will be a good way to take in the sights of the Clyde.

‘If people can’t actually make the event then we would encourage them to donate online at the ‘justgiving’ address.’

The yellow ‘banana’ speedboat sets off on Saturday August 9.

A raffle will also be held on the day with a signed Scotland Rugby shirt up for grabs.
