CHILDREN from golf clubs in Inveraray, Tarbert and Helensburgh were given an unforgettable experience this week when they received an hour’s coaching with Colin Montgomerie.
As part of ClubGolf, a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, Professional Golfers’ Association, the Golf Foundation and SportScotland, the programme was launched by Colin Montgomerie in 2003.
‘These children remind me of my youth,’ said Monty. ‘This is what I did when I was 10 or 11, I was playing three rounds a day in my school holidays and it was great.
‘These kids are good and with opportunity we can find talent.
‘Who knows, there could be another Tiger Woods out here somewhere and we won’t know if we don’t provide the opportunity.’
Ten-year-old Rory Campbell from Inveraray Golf Club, said: ‘He was brilliant and really nice.’
John McNab, Junior Convenor and qualified volunteer coach at Tarbert Golf Club, was equally impressed.
He said: ‘We are in the second year of ClubGolf coaching at the Club and it’s been well worth it, the kids are enjoying it.
‘Two of our children were here today - they haven’t stopped thinking about it for the last two weeks - and being coached by Colin Montgomerie was a great experience.’
