AN ARDRISHAIG pub that went up in flames three years ago is to be rebuilt by its new owner.

Kilmichael Glassary businessman Colin Meikle is believed to have bought the fire damaged Lorne Bar in Chalmers Street from its previous owners six months ago, and is hoping to restore it to the way it was.

A spokesman for Martin Stewart Architects in Lochgilphead - who submitted the planning application to Argyll and Bute Council on behalf of Mr Meikle - said this week: ‘There are still a few hurdles to get over before rebuilding work begins on the Lorne.

‘It is ridiculous that we had to apply for planning consent to put the bar back to the way it was, but that is what we had to do.

‘The owner does not have a timescale, but does want to be trading as soon as possible.’

John Law of Law’s Newsagent in Ardrishaig, said he would be delighted to see the pub reopen as it is an ‘eyesore’ the way it is.

He added: ‘It has been like the house with no roof for years now and it’s not a nice sight for people driving through Ardrishaig to see. It would be good for the village if the Lorne was to reopen and would hopefully boost the local economy.’

Ian Croucher of the Argyll Hotel also welcomed the news. ‘It will be great if the Lorne reopens and would give people another reason to come to the village,’ he said.

‘Chalmers Street is becoming a little dilapidated, so any other private businesses taking over the offices available, would also be welcome.’
