AN ARDRISHAIG woman was ‘horrified and disgusted’ to find her children playing in sewage waste at a local beauty spot.
Lynne Girdwood fled the scene with her family when she realised they had been playing in an area littered with sanitary products and wrappers.
Brown scummy froth
The mother of three also noticed a ‘very unpleasant brown scummy froth’ on the water at the split rock beach in Ardrishaig.
She said: ‘The beach had been clear during the good weather and I was down there last Friday with my children who were playing and swimming.
‘I became aware of sanitary waste, a 16 inch filter and various bits of fishing kit floating around. I was totally revolted and scooped my young son up and ran home with the children.’
Janette Laughton of Ardrishaig Community Council condemned the situation this week.
She said there has been ‘all sorts’ of problems since Scottish Water began replacing pumps and filters at various pumping stations in the village 18 months ago.
She added: ‘It is disgraceful that this should happen where children often play.
‘These problems are supposed to have been sorted and I can imagine how upset the mother of these children would have been.’
No problems
A spokesman for Scottish Water said: ‘A Network Services Officer (NSO) recently inspected the foreshore at Ardrishaig following a complaint from a local resident about items found there.
‘The NSO concluded that items on the foreshore were not there as a result of a failure of Scottish Water’s system.
‘We have had no issues with the three pumping stations in the area in recent months and no problems with the waste water treatment works that would cause this kind of incident.’
