A LOCHGILPHEAD soldier bid a fond farewell to family and friends last weekend – before making his way back to the front line in Afghanistan.
Campbell Wright won’t return home until September, but is already looking forward to a pint in the pub with pals when he gets back.
‘I miss my wife and weans, but I also miss my pals and a good night out,’ he laughed.
Campbell, aged 37, joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1998.
Since then he has completed tours of duty in Bosnia, Poland and Canada. Nine months’ intensive training followed before he was posted to Afghanistan in February for two months.
After a short break home to visit wife Ann-Marie and children Lorne, 16, Demi (13) and 10-year-old Chloe, Campbell returned to Afghanistan last Saturday.
He said: ‘If you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go.
‘When I first went out there my first impressions were that it was hot, dusty and busy.
‘You always have a bit of fear, especially when I think of my good friend who was shot dead by a sniper in Iraq in 2006.’
However, Campbell loves army life and believes National Service should be reintroduced.
‘I think it would cut crime and give young people a purpose in life.
‘I wouldn’t have been able to travel the world if I hadn’t joined up.
‘It doesn’t matter where I am, my heart is always in Argyll.’
