Historic landmark on the open market
Published:  02 May, 2008

ONE OF Mid Argyll’s most historic landmarks is to be sold on the open market.

The Clock Lodge which sits on the A83 outside Lochgilphead will be sold by Argyll and Bute Council after funding difficulties. Built in the mid 19th century, the lodge has been owned by the council since 1975.

In 2002 proposals were put in place for the building to be transformed into county archives but Historic Scotland rejected the plans causing the project to fall by the wayside.

A spokeswoman for Argyll and Bute Council confirmed: ‘The council has made the decision to dispose of the Clock Lodge. We had hoped to transform the building into the council’s archives and planning permission had been granted.’

A spokeswoman for Historic Scotland said: ‘There are many criteria that have to be met to be eligible for grant support from Historic Scotland. After careful consideration, we felt that the project put forward for the Clock Lodge did not meet these and would be over reliant on public funds to reach completion.’

Concerned Mid Argyll resident, Robert Wakeham added: ‘I would like to see the building in community hands instead of a private buyer but I suppose it’s better than it lying stagnant.’
