Tarbert aim to go ‘green’
Published:  02 May, 2008

A TARBERT conservation group are in the running for £1million to transform the small fishing village into a ‘green’ community.

The Tarbert Conservation Initiative (TCI) have beaten around 360 entrants to reach the final 100 shortlisted entries in the Big Green Challenge.

The competition is the work of NESTA – the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts and aims to encourage communities to come up with innovative ideas to tackle climate change.

Green-minded villagers have developed the ‘Carbon Neutral Eco Flat Renovation’ project.

The project seeks to renovate Tarbert homes, owned by housing association ACHA, by insulating the walls with low energy material and introducing vapour barriers which in turn lead to a more eco-friendly way of house insulation.

Ed Tyler, vice chairman of TCI said the group were delighted to be shortlisted.

He said: ‘It is such great news to be down to the last 100, especially when we are up against groups from across the UK.

‘This project is really about how we can reduce our carbon footprint as a community and how we can actively sustain this within the village. We’ve all put in a lot of work to get to this stage.’

Other initiatives the group are putting in place include a plastic bag free campaign, a community well-being drive, a time bank scheme and a youth project.
