SATURDAY, May 10 will see the second running of the Kintyre Way Relay, a long distance race along the Tarbert to Campbeltown section of the Kintyre Way, the scenic walking route which opened in August 2006.
Last year’s inaugural event was based on relay teams of three runners each doing 22 miles, but this year the format for the race is much more flexible.
The runners’ event is now based on teams of up to six people with a choice of distances starting from eight miles, while the walkers’ event is based on groups walking together for their chosen distance.
Although billed as a race, this sort of event is more about personal challenges.
Last year Eryk Grant, from Harrogate, amazingly ran the full 66 miles from Tarbert to Campbeltown, and did so in just 13½ hours.
This year, David Scott from Glasgow is going to run a section of the Kintyre Way dragging a heavy lorry tyre as part of his preparation for the Gobi Challenge in Mongolia in July.
Local Jackie Fulton and daughter Alix are doing the walk as part of their preparation for the 54-mile Caledonian Challenge on June 14.
Event organiser Rob Reid said: ‘What we’re trying to do is to highlight the Kintyre Way, not only for locals but also for visitors who might not otherwise come to Kintyre at all.
‘We’re encouraging runners from outside the area to bring friends and family, to stay for the weekend or longer, and to find out what Kintyre has to offer.’
