‘Artwork’ vandals hit Lochgilphead
‘A despicable act by irresponsible and mindless criminals’

UNSAVOURY artwork has blighted Lochgilphead in recent weeks and local residents have had enough.

Over the past week The Argyllshire Advertiser has received calls from angry locals complaining of ‘disgusting’ and ‘offensive’ signs and words being painted on walls, houses, post boxes and lampposts over the past few weeks.

One Lochgilphead resident, who asked not to be named, said he was sickened by an image sprayed on the gable wall of a house on Union Street.

He said: ‘I regularly walk along Union Street but when I saw that disgusting object drawn onto the wall of a house, I turned and walked the opposite way – it really is awful.

‘It’s the person living inside the house that I feel sorry for – what a thing to have on your wall.’

Another target was a house on Bishopton Road, which had an expletive word painted on its front wall.

House owner, Eric Box, said it was a stupid thing for someone to do.

‘The graffiti was sprayed onto our house during the night of April 2/3.

Mr Box added: ‘This was a stupid, mindless and cowardly thing to have done.’

Other areas of the town to be targeted include the Mid Argyll Swimming Pool, which had images sprayed onto the front and back walls and the post box on Bishopton Road.

James Simpson of Lochgilphead Community Council said: ‘This sort of behaviour has got to be nipped in the bud – Lochgilphead has never had a serious problem with graffiti.’

Councillor Donnie MacMillan condemned the vandalism as a despicable act by irresponsible and mindless criminals.

Councillor MacMillan added: ‘This is something that will not be tolerated in Lochgilphead or for that matter in Argyll and Bute.’

Sergeant Martin Balkeen of Lochgilphead Police said: ‘Enquiries are continuing into these unacceptable acts of vandalism.

‘I would call on any members of the public to come forward and of course any information can be given anonymously through Crimestoppers.’

Anyone with information related to these incidents can contact Lochgilphead Police Office on 01546 702200 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
