Parkinson’s artist exhibits at Dochus
Published:  11 April, 2008

ARGYLL artist Barrie Richards is the latest painter to hold an exhibition of his work in Lochgilphead’s Dochus Centre.

Barrie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1997 and since then, says he has painted with ‘an even greater intensity.’

Painting fills most of his time and gives Barrie a focus and helps to keep his joints flexible.

On the opening day of Barrie’s exhibition, members of the Parkinson’s disease Society also attended to show their support and to raise awareness of the disease.

The centre and gallery in Campbell Street is a base for the Dochus Fund - a recognised Scottish charity founded by John Paterson after he was diagnosed with both Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) and Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Using his art to help others, cards and reproductions of his work are sold through Dochas Trading Ltd. with all profits supporting the work of the fund and the Dochas Centre.

The Dochus Fund supports carers of people diagnosed with either MND or GBS across Scotland and provides financial support to research and support services that makes the lives of people living with MND or GBS better.

The Gallery exhibits work by the fund’s founder and holds exhibitions by other local groups and artists throughout the year.

Members of the public can join the Dochus Centre as a ‘friend’ or a volunteer.
