Star are the Kings of Ropework
Published:  28 March, 2008

LOCHGILPHEAD Red Star welcomed Kings Park Rangers to the Ropework Park on Saturday.

With manager Moore away on a spying mission to Glasgow, assistant Weir was left in charge of this game.

Star started off slowly with the Glasgow team putting the home defence under a lot of pressure, but the rear guard of Naisby, Houston, Campbell and Broderick held out well.

The game burst into life after 15 minutes when Star were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. D Campbell picked his spot and curled an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner to make it 1-0 to Star.

Ten minutes later Star doubled their lead when Russell met an inch perfect cross from Morrison to bullet a header past Kings keeper Jack Waugh.

Worse was to follow for the 48-year-old keeper when he had to be helped from the field 10 minutes later. A clash with Russell resulted in a badly broken nose.

With half time approaching, C Weir should have wrapped up this tie but his volley from six yards flew high over the bar.

Star started the second half well. Phillps, Campbell, Houston, Weir and Morrison started to make effective passing moves but the third goal wasn’t coming.

After an hour, Weir sent on Peacock for C Weir and the young striker didn’t take long to make an impact. A through ball from Campbell fell to the feet of Peacock who outran the defence to slot the ball beyond the keeper – 3-0 to Star.

Star replaced Morrison for McFarlane for the last 25 minutes and with 10 minutes to go, Jap Campbell delivered the goods once more. From 20 yards out he hit a carbon copy of his first goal with an inch perfect free kick into the top right hand corner – 4-0 to Star.

With seconds to go, Kings Park got the goal they probably deserved when poor marking at the back left McCulloch with no chance as the number eight shot home from close range.

Red Star again would like to thank all club sponsors and council boys for getting the park playable again.

Lochgilphead Red Star AFC and everyone connected with the club from the chairman, committee, management and players would like to congratulate and wish club captain Ian Houston and fiancée Kirsteen MacDonald all the very best on their big day tomorrow. Have a great time.

Team: McCulloch, Broderick, Houston, Campbell, Naisby, Phillips, Campbell, Morrison, Houston, Weir, Russell, Peacock, McFarlane.
