PIPERS, singers and budding thespians took to the stage last week for the first instalment of this year’s Mid Argyll Music Festival.
Spread over two weeks, the festival has this year been split to accommodate Easter weekend.
Now its 29th year the festival kicked off with the chanter and piping classes in Lochgilphead Joint Campus.
There was a strong contingent of performers from Kintyre and Cowal together with a number of local participants from Mid Argyll.
Catherine Paton from Strachur adjudicated the chanter and novice piper classes in the morning and Robert Stewart from Inchinnan adjudicated the March, Strathspey and Reel in the afternoon.
The festival moved to Ardrishaig Public Hall on Monday where the speech classes took place.
A total of 170 budding thespians took to the stage to recite their individual poem and Scots verse.
This section, which started four years ago, has proved popular and the festival organisers are delighted to welcome back Jane Mowat from Clarkston who adjudicated the first speech class in 2004.
The festival breaks for Easter weekend and will resume on the evening of Tuesday March 25 with senior piano classes in Ardrishaig Hall and Scottish Country Dancing in Inveraray Primary School.
Piano, vocal and choral classes will be adjudicated by Coral Gould from Burton on Trent and Eric Jennings from Cheshire.
They will be joined by Bryan Allen, head of brass at RSAMD for the final competitions on Saturday (March 29).
This day hosts Choral competitions, action songs and numerous instrumental classes.
This will be the first occasion when all these competitions will be taking place in one location – the Lochgilphead Joint Campus.
It is envisaged that almost 1000 children will be taking part on this special day and the festival organisers will be making every effort to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
The festival will conclude with a concert to be given by the Scottish Co-op Band at night.
The internationally renowned band were enthusiastically received at the conclusion of last year’s festival and this year again will provide a fitting climax to the festival.
Tickets for Saturday evening will be made available at the festival box office during the week of the festival and may also be purchased at the door.
