A TARBERT youngsters’ project to build a Loch Fyne skiff is in ship-shape condition.
Tarbert Yacht club has seen a great deal of activity over the winter with 30 youngsters shaping hull sections to build a construction jig.
Oars are also under production and local timber has been sourced, felled and is being seasoned for the building process.
The mast and other spars are being fashioned from the solid trunks of Douglas Fir trees.
The next stage will be visits to the premises of A.R. Way boatbuilders to learn about the backbone construction and clinker planking techniques.
By the early summer it is hope the group will be at the fitting-out stage.
The youngsters maintain log books recording the building process and have sourced information on skiff history and ring net fishing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Tarbert Conservation Initiative are grateful for support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and numerous local businesses and individuals who have made the project possible.
