MID ARGYLL is to add another yachting event to the calendar next year – with up to 20 yachts taking part in a regatta in July.

The inaugural Mylne Regatta 2009 next summer is open to any yacht designed or built by A Mylne & Co and will begin in Glasgow on July 10.

The event will consist of a week-long series of cruises and races between Glasgow, Ardrishaig, Crinan, Ardfern and Campbeltown with the yachts finishing up in Oban in time for the Classic Malts Cruise.

Large yachts will cruise from Rothesay to Campbeltown during the second race of the event, via the Kyles of Bute, with an evening reception in Campbeltown. The next day the yachts will be leaving Campbeltown for Ardfern in the third race of the series.

Smaller yachts will go directly from Rothesay to Ardrishaig, entering the Crinan Canal on arrival, before moving through the canal on July 15 and on to Ardfern.

One yacht which has been confirmed for entry is the Eileen II which was built in Glasgow in 1934, and is a 92 ft large yacht.

The Mylne office designed over 400 yachts, a significant proportion of which are still sailing actively today in the UK, the Carribean and the Mediterranean. The company is in contact with some owners already and is encouraging them to take part in the regatta.

The event comes at a good time for Ardrishaig, where there are hopes to develop the waterfront in the coming years. The village’s proposed developments include a marina and better facilities for seafarers.

Work on a new slipway is due to start next week.
