MID ARGYLL Round Table have donated £2000 to the ARMS Centre in Lochgilphead for their Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy unit – an amount that should pay for the unit for a year.
On top of this, the Round Table wish to take a more active role in sponsoring the centre, offering assistance in a variety of ways.
Chairman of the local branch of the Round Table, Robert McGlynn, explained: ‘It’s good for us to have something to focus on. It’s not just the therapy unit, there’s various ways we can help out. We all do different jobs so whether it’s help with electric work or plumbing, if we don’t do it ourselves, we probably know someone who can help.’
The oxygen therapy chamber works by providing the patient with oxygen at a higher than atmospheric pressure. It’s therapeutic value is posited to lie in a drastically increased partial pressure of oxygen in the tissues of the body. It also helps oxygen travel through the blood. The treatment is seen as useful for Multiple Sclerosis, burns and a host of other complaints including sports injuries.
Centre Manager Karen McCurry said : ‘We don’t get any funding from the NHS or central government so it’s great that the Round Table have agreed to sponsor the unit for us.’
The centre requires £70,000 a year to operate and relies heavily on donations from the local community. Members of the public are welcome to use the Campbell Street centre, including the Hyperbaric Chamber,
