Win dispels winter gloom
Published:  18 January, 2008

Having spent several weeks in the doldrums in Lochgilphead Golf Club’s Winter League (Keith has actually been there), David Sinclair finally got his game together and managed to complete eighteen holes without anything serious going wrong. Even then he tied on 38 stableford points with his cousin Ross who has been making all the headlines with his great scoring. However, David won on the day by virtue of a count back over the last six holes and needs the points.

Ross was second and also won his singles knockout match which puts him in the semi-final again.

Keith Cowan was third and has developed into one of the most consistent players this year.

Jim Hunter got really fed up with the rain on the second nine holes. He was four under par on the first nine holes but struggled coming home in five over par and was disappointed at what might have been.

Alec MacAulay played well in the wet conditions and putted well but, with it being so wet, a number of his putts which looked certain to drop pulled up short.

Eric Capocci was playing well but the wet conditions also got to him on the second nine holes. In the end, he was satisfied with his five points on the day which keep him in second place in the league.

With the soggy conditions Bill Dick, our Links Golf specialist, was at a distinct disadvantage. This was exacerbated by promises of sunshine from David Sinclair who had read the weather forecast for Malta on the internet by mistake. Bill took it all in his stride and was delighted with his four points.

Kenneth MacAulay played his usual steady game but was let down by three holes where he did not score. The rest of his card shows what he is capable of.

Iain McLeod was ninth and his scorecard is like a carbon copy of Kenneth’s, three no-scores and fifteen holes of great golf.

With only eleven playing due to the dreadful weather, it was a battle for the last point of the day. John Downie and Donald Carmichael had the same score but Donald picked up the point on a count back over the last nine holes.

Results: 10 D Sinclair, 9 R Sinclair, 8 K Cowan, 7 J Hunter, 6 A MacAulay, 5 E Capocci, 4 B Dick, 3 K MacAulay, 2 I McLeod, 1 D Carmichael.

Nearest the pin: 7th I McLeod.
