Fantastic fair trade fashion

FOLLOWING hard on the heels of the British Fashion Awards in London, Ardfern hosted its own Fair Trade fashion show in Craignish Village Hall last Saturday.

On a wild and stormy night, about 100 people braved the elements to enjoy one of Ardfern’s famous ‘curry nights’ after which they were entertained by Craignish’s own supermodels, who strutted their stuff on the catwalk with great aplomb

Ranging from 3 years old to ‘mature’ and in size from tiny to not quite so tiny, the models displayed a selection of fairly traded garments from India, Nepal and South America, all supplied by The Balmore Trust, a Glasgow based charity.

In addition to selling Fair Trade goods, the Balmore Trust supports projects concerned with health, education and poverty relief, both at home and overseas.

A far cry from the dowdy image that the term ‘Fair Trade’ used to conjure up, the clothes modelled were fashionable, practical and exciting. Many of the garments, in particular those of the children, were reversible, being multicoloured or appliquéd on one side and self coloured on the other and the fabrics used included organic cotton, hemp, silk and alpaca.

Earlier in the day, The Balmore Trust had a well attended sale of clothes and crafts in the hall, taking over £1,200, while the Curry Night and Fashion Show raised £360 for Village Hall funds.
