GOLF captains Iain McLeod and Kathleen Young treated fellow members to a wonderful sociable afternoon’s golf and refreshments on Sunday 30 September to celebrate the end of the golfing season at Lochgilphead Golf Club.
Nine teams of four players took part and the club took the opportunity to welcome lady learners as well as juniors to the now well-established mixed Texas scramble format. It was truly amazing how well everyone played, albeit over nine holes.
‘If I could have a card like that in the monthly medal, I’d be well pleased’ was a refrain heard from more than one player returning to the clubhouse with only four strokes difference between the first and eighth team.
Shot of the day was undoubtedly that played by Ian Martin as his team faced a ball lying extremely close to the stone dyke behind the 6th green.
The team ruminated and cogitated for at least four minutes before deciding they would all attack the problem differently.
His fellow team members tried hacking out to one side and the other, his female colleague tried a spectacular hockey scoop shot to no avail.
Then bold Ian faced the foe head on, smacked the ball against the wall and was acclaimed a hero when it landed right in the middle of the green behind him. And they sank the putt for a par!
Nearly every team played to par or under but when handicaps were taken into account, the captains themselves found their names on the winners’ list. Captain Ian’s team, which included Nicky Ciarella, Jane Hepburn and Ann Foyle, came second with a nett 25.6 while the lady captain’s team of Kathleen Young, Morag Cupples, John Downie and Matthew MacAulay carded an incredible 24.9 and are seen smiling delightedly in the accompanying photograph.
