‘UTTERLY unique.’ That’s how the work of a Taynuilt artist has been described this week.

And the art in thread by Gerrie of Achbeag is now on show at The Dochas Gallery in Lochgilphead for the rest of this month.

‘The Singing Ringing Tree’ exhibition had its opening night last Friday, and the response to Gerrie’s work has been one of delight by everyone who has attended.

The pieces worked and designed for the exhibition were completed at Achbeag on the Balindone road, about a mile from Taynuilt.

Gerrie started work on the exhibits in September 2003 and the last piece, entitled ‘Beachcombing’ was finished on June 1 2007.

Gerrie’s day began with a two-hour period from 6.30am to 8.30am, and continued from 10am to 12 noon, and 1pm to 3pm completed the working day.

The artist said: ‘The evening was spent in unpicking or if successful, laying out the colours for the next day. Up to 20 needles could be threaded on average. Seven stitches were completed in one minute and in a two-hour period 840 would be made. That means that in a day, approximately 5000 stitches would be completed. I worked six days a week.

‘On Friday’s I visited the Robin’s Nest Café in Taynuilt, caught the train to Oban and returned to Achbeag on the city bus from Oban to Glasgow. For over four years, this work pattern did not vary.’

Although none of Gerrie’s work is for sale, he will be in The Dochas Gallery some Tuesday mornings for anyone who is interested in commissioning a piece from him.

The Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am until 4pm.

One woman who attended the exhibition opening commented: ‘It’s great that this artist is showing his work here. He appears to be very disciplined. His work is brilliant and should be seen by as many people as possible.’
