MEMBERS of the Mid Argyll Pipe Band are now putting the finishing touches to their show Blackwood & Hickory, the culmination of a year-long programme of workshops and rehearsals that has taken the band forward to a new chapter in its illustrious history.
Working alongside music industry professionals, and admirably meeting the challenges of an opportunity not often made available, the pipes and drum corps of Mid Argyll have helped secure the future of the pipe band through team work, dedication, positive attitude and recognition of their own talents.
Blackwood & Hickory is their own show, a reflection of the musical diversity and commitment to be found amongst the ranks of one of the oldest pipe bands in Scotland. The rehearsal schedule has been about more than just playing the music, however, as aspects of stage production, presentation and technical know-how have all been vital to the overall outcomes of the project.
The house band providing a new framework to the programme of traditional and original tunes adds an eclectic dimension, with elements of world music and urban beats lending a subtle overtone to the talents of the pipe band. Guitarist John Saich and drummer James Mackintosh worked together on the Capercaillie Secret People and Get Out albums during the mid 90’s, supporting Runrig on the Big Wheel UK tour and headlining many festivals across Europe. Keyboard player Brian McAlpine, now an integral member of Session A9, was a contemporary of the Glasgow music scene for many years with the Pearlfishers, along with Davy Scott, now a familiar voice on Radio Scotland.
The stars of the show are the pipers and drummers themselves that have devoted their time and energies into producing a unique and entertaining performance that will resonate for yeas to come.
Tickets for Blackwood & Hickory are priced £8.00 and available from the Argyll Book Centre, Lochgilphead, telephone 01546 603596. The Mid Argyll Pipe Band and Blackwood & Hickory are sponsored by Angus Maitland with grant assistance from HIE Argyll and the Islands and Awards For All.
