AUTHORS Marian Pallister and David Adams McGilp were on hand at the Argyll Book Centre on Saturday to sign copies of their new book ‘Yesterday was Summer – the Marion Campbell Story’.
Marion Campbell of Kilberry was a fascinating woman who published more than eighty books before her death in 2000. There was talk of turning one of her novels, The Dark Twin, into a Hollywood movie around the time of her demise.
Her life story is one of privilege and determination in the face of her father’s alcoholism and difficulties with the estate. Her books cover subjects as varied as children’s fiction, local history and a biography of Alexander III.
Her childhood and upbringing are evocatively portrayed by Pallister with McGilp taking a scholarly look at her output as an author.
Alongside her literary work, Marion Campbell’s roles as an archaeologist and local councillor have meant that her influence is pervasive in Mid Argyll and the book will please anyone with an interest in the history of this area or Scottish literature in general.
The Sunday Herald said this book is ‘an important contribution to our Scottish heritage in reviving the reputation of this amazing, battling woman’.
