AFTER an 11 year break, five junior members of the members clubs of the West Argyll Bowling Association met at Lochgilphead Bowling Club on Sunday 22 July to play for The John Cherry Plate in perfect bowling conditions.
Shaun Hay, Andrew Forbes, Duncan MacAlpine (all Oban), John Crawford (Ardrishaig) and Stephen Cupples (Tarbert) were this year’s competitors and played against each other in a round robin format.
Many of the games were extremely tight and there were not many shots between the competitors over each game of eight ends.
With each winning player earning two points for a win, on the completion of the Round Robin, the winner was John Crawford (Ardrishaig) who was the only undefeated player on the day with seven points out of a possible eight. Stephen Cupples (Tarbert) was the runner up with five points and the best shots differential.
Mr John Cherry, who donated this trophy in 1981, was encouraged by the standard of play that he had seen and stated that the future of bowls in the West Argyll area was in good hands. He then presented The John Cherry Plate to John Crawford who also received a winner’s medal. Stephen Cupples was also presented with a runners up medal for his efforts in the competition. These medals were donated by the West Argyll Bowling Association.
It was extremely encouraging for the 30 spectators to see that the youth of this area can play for a trophy in not only a competitive yet sporting manner.
