    THIS WEEK’S Down Memory Lane was taken from The Argyllshire Advertiser’s archives.

    Pictured is Dr Alastair Ranger taking over the keys from M and K MacLeod for the new Lochgilphead Surgery in Lorne Street in September 1988.

    Also pictured are Doctors’ Pat Guy, Mark Simpson and Colin Mackie.

    THIS week’s picture was submitted by Susan Cameron of Ardrishaig.

    It shows Ardrishaig Parish Church, the yacht basin’s entrance and exit with the Crinan Canal on the right hand side.

    The hall on the left was the ASDI School for the Royal Navy during the Second World War.

    Ardrishaig became a hum of activity during 1958 when the village played host to the King George’s Fund for Sailors event.

    THIS WEEK’S Down Memory Lane photograph was supplied by Mr Robert Wakeham from Castleton.

    The picture, taken by Mr Fred Reid, shows Kilmory Castle Clock Lodge, just outside Lochgilphead, in the mid 1970s.

    The lodge was built in the mid 19th century by architect Joseph Gordon Douglas.

    The building was originally built as a gate lodge to Kilmory Castle.

    This week’s picture shows councillors Dugald McKinnon for North Kintyre, Alison Hay for Craignish and Glenaray, Donald McMillan for Lochgilphead and Bruce Robertson for Knapdale. They had been newly elected to the new single-tier Argyll and Bute authority in April 1991.

    Kenny Rowan of Ardrishaig handed us this delightful picture of his father Ian advertising his Driving School in 1965. The picture was taken at the Bank of Scotland in Lochgilphead.

    The picture shows, from left: May McGlynn, her husband and Ian’s partner in the driving school Teddy McGlynn, Ian Rowan and the lady on the right we’re not sure about. If anyone can identify her or if it is you, let us know.

    Martha Kennedy of Lochgilphead handed in this picture of Colchester Square in Lochgilphead during the last severe flooding which we believe was in 1991. Canoes were out on Lochnell Street and the putting shed bobbing about where the front green would normally be seen.

    Roddy MacDonald of Lochgilphead contributed this picture from his late father Donald's collection. It shows the top of Manse Brae in Lochgilphead before the houses were built along the lower fields of the brae. It was taken from Dunchrobhan in the late 1950s.

    This picture of Clachan, Kintyre, dates back to the late 1800s and was handed in by Mr Ian MacDonald, previously of Clachan and now of Lochgilphead.

    The thatched houses in the picture were superceded by houses with red tiles, by John McKinnon of Balinakill in 1905. John was the nephew of previous owner of Loup and Balinakill estates, Sir William McKinnon, who died in 1893.

    The picture was given to Ian MacDonald by a family in Canada, who are descendants of people who left Clachan in the 19th century

    This photo from 1884 was handed in by Don Dennis of Achamore House, Gigha. It shows the team of workmen employed by Jackson Brown & Co of Glasgow to build Achamore House.

    Don said: ‘The photo was shared with us by John Jackson’s grand-daughter, who came to visit at Achamore House 10 days ago. John Jackson is the man in the top hat. Nobody else is identified for us at this time.’

    This week’s Down Memory Lane picture shows a tractor pull from the 1993 Mid Argyll Show in Kilmartin.

    Although this year’s Show in Lochgilphead will not be going ahead due to the foot and mouth outbreak, the Argyllshire Advertiser thought we would print this picture to remind people of the fun that has been had by locals and visitors alike at shows over the years.

    Local people and school children gather round as work is about to start on the Action and Research for Multiple Sclerosis (ARMS) Centre in Lochgilphead’s Campbell Street in 1994. The centre was established by a group of people with MS and their carers. They raised funds locally by staging community events to build a therapy centre which was officially opened on June 20, 1996.

    IAN MacIntyre’s shop has become a bit of an institution in Tarbert and after more than 100 years the shop has finally been restored to its original size.

    He bought the tobacconists 37 years ago, which sits next to the old Clydesdale bank that closed its doors some time last year.
